Deepings Raft Race 2020: While the race has been cancelled, a mini raft building competition has been launched for children instead

For years, the Deepings Raft Race has been a huge town event. But, like many things this year, it has sadly been cancelled.

Instead, organisers are encouraging children to enter a mini raft building competition which they can do from home.

The team behind the event says that it would ideally be built from recycled materials and designed to any theme you like.

While the rafts won’t be raced on the river this year, creators can keep them for 2021. And organisers have a special request...

“We ask that for what would have been raft race weekend this year (August 1 and 2) you display them in your front window or front garden for the public to enjoy,” said Andy Pelling, vice chairman of the Raft Race.

Entries close on July 28, 2020 and the team will publish pictures of the best entries on the Deepings Raft Race website and social media pages.

“If we get enough entries, we will produce a ‘route’ to show people where they can have a walk around the Deepings to admire the mini rafts,” Andy added.

The winner will be announced on August 2 and will receive £50. To add to the fun, the Raft Race Committee will walk around the Deepings on the Sunday in fancy dress, supporting the Deeping-a-thon, which aims to raise money for charities that will have lost out due to the cancellation of many fundraising events this year.
