Black Widow, Freaky and The Tomorrow War coming up on the big screen
BLACK WIDOW (12A) SHOWCASE CINEMA DE LUX PETERBOROUGH, FROM WEDNESDAY (JULY 7)
After being delayed for 14 months due to the pandemic, the movie side of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four belatedly commences. In this superhero prequel story – set between Civil War and Infinity War and prior to her death in Endgame – we see Scarlett Johansson’s highly-skilled Natasha Romanoff star alongside Stranger Things’ David Harbour and starlet Florence Pugh (Fighting with my Family) to confront a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her ‘spy’ past – long before she became an ‘Avenger’. It will also be released simultaneously on Disney Premier Access via Disney+ for twenty quid.
FREAKY (15) SHOWCASE CINEMA DE LUX PETERBOROUGH, FROM TOMORROW
This horror-comedy from the team behind Happy Death Day has received some generally positive reviews from several independent movie festivals, praising the performances of lead stars Vince Vaughn (Dodgeball) and Kathryn Newton (Blockers). After high schooler Millie (Newton) swaps bodies with Vaughn’s deranged killer – known as ‘The Butcher’ – she discovers she has 24 hours to reverse the ‘curse’ before the change becomes permanent, in this novel twist on Freaky Friday from famed horror aficionados Blumhouse Productions.
THE TOMORROW WAR (13+) AMAZON PRIME, FROM
This blockbuster sci-fi actioner had been pulled from the release schedule multiple times – before being acquired for a reportedly whopping $200million by Amazon Studios. When time travellers from 2051 come back in time to recruit soldiers and civilians – with mankind losing a war against an invading alien species – Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris ‘Star Lord’ Pratt’s ex-military man Dan Forester teams up with his estranged father (Oscar winner JK Simmons) and a kick-ass Colonel (Aussie actress Yvonne Strahovski), to answer the call.
