Renowned Luther Vandross tribute coming to Spalding

Luther Vandross tribute artist, Steve Williamson, is performing in the South Holland Centre on July 26 as part of his North, South, East, West UK tour, writes Patrick Walsh.

Having been encouraged to sing from an early age by his father, Williamson grew up singing gospel in his local church, performing numbers from artists such as The Winans, Fred Hammond and Daryl Colley.

From this, he grew and developed through listening to well-known soul artists like Luther, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder and Ella Fitzgerald.

More recently, Williamson took to the stage with famed star, Jocelyn Brown and worked as a backing vocalist on the X-Factor which together reflect not only his talent, but also his ability to stand out from the crowd.

He's also performed with Soul II Soul

Steve told Spalding Today: "It was a friend of mine who lives in Spalding who first suggested I perform here.

"Last year I played in the function room and it was a sell-out. So this year I'm coming back and performing in the main theatre.

"I've been singing since I was two and it was motown singer Sharn Adela who first suggested I do a tribute to Luther Vandross.

"There is only one Luther Vandross and I'm not trying to be him. I just sing his songs in my style."

Steve, who now lives in Kent, is also putting together a tribute CD to mark 14 years since the death of the loved soul star.

The show takes place at the South Holland Centre on July 26 at 8pm. Tickets are £24.50, concessions are £20. Tel: 01775 764777.
