Aspiring musicians from South Holland can learn how to play instruments from the Middle Ages at a workshop in one of Donington's most historic buildings.

Early Music for the Curious, a three-day cultural workshop with medieval music expert Ian Pittaway, takes place at Wykes Manor Retreat Centre, Wykes Lane, Donington, between Friday, September 28, and Sunday, September 30.

The music event at the former home of 18th century landowner Thomas Cowley will include sessions on such early English instruments as the harp, lute, citole and hurdy-gurdy.

Mr Pittaway said: "I play early music for a living and I've found that so many people are interested in wanting to handle or play the instruments I use.

"So when my performances reach the interval, I invite people to come up see the instruments I play.

"So when my performances reach the interval, I invite people to come up see the instruments I play.

"It made sense then that I decided to hold these workshops because I want people to get an ideal first foot on the ladder for anyone who hasn't played this style of music before and would like to."

Mr Pittaway's expertise in early music has led to him being involved in projects, such as BBC TV's Horrible Histories series, school visits and historical re-enactments.

He is no stranger to Wykes Manor having performed there last month in his "From the Troubadour to Shakespeare" concert where he played music on instruments used between the 13th and 17th centuries.

Mr Pittaway said: "These instruments are foundational for all music.

"But not only is it just intellectually appreciative, it's a visceral experience as well."

The workshop has been co-organised by artist and author Jennifer Bell who said: "This is a lovely opportunity for anyone who has enjoyed the music used in recent historical dramas on TV to find out more, but in a very entertaining way."

Tickets for the workshop are available either for a single day or the entire weekend, with prices ranging from £50 to £145.
