Comic book, science fiction and fantasy “geeks” will be in heavens when a new event comes to Spalding next year.

Geeks South Lincs Comic-Con takes place at Springfields Events and Conference Centre, Spalding, on Sunday, February 26, 2017, from 10am until 4pm.

Mark Longman, organiser of Geeks South Lincs Comic-Con at Springfields Events and Conference Centre, Spalding, on Sunday, February 26, 2017

The event is believed to be the first of its kind in Spalding and organiser Mark Longman said a number of special guests are being lined up to visit the town.

Mark said: “I’ve run events throughout Lincolnshire for the last three of four years, including Cleethorpes and Lincoln which together brought about 4,600 people through the door.

“I usually have about five or six guests such as (former Dr Who actor) Colin Baker, Dave Prowse (Darth Vader in the original Star Wars movies), as well as inflatable Ghostbuster monsters and other characters.

“I know Springfields as a venue and I really like it, but there’s not much in the way of comic book events in south Lincolnshire.

“Spalding is quite a good location, with Boston, Grantham and Peterborough about 30 minutes’ drive away, and easily accessible for people.”

Typical Geeks events include trade and exhibition stands, model displays, special guests, fancy dress competitions and chances for autograph hunters to get their hands on signed souvenirs and memorabilia from their favourite comic book, TV and film characters.

Mark said: “I think it’ll be something new for the area because people can get involved by dressing up as their favourite film and TV characters, comic book heroes and science fiction stars.

“There will be lots of people dressed as every sort of character you can imagine and I think this event could be something that is completely different from anything Spalding has seen before.

“Geeks South Lincs Comic-Con will be a good, fun, wholesome family days that won’t cost a lot to get in and once people come in, they will be wowed by what they see.”

West Midlands-based Mark Longman started off as a fan of the original Star Wars trilogy which includes The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Mark said: “I started off as a collector of Star Wars toys before taking the figures and models I collected to shows.

“But about three or four years ago, I decided to organise a comic book and fan convention in Cleethorpes where we had about 1,600 people through the door.

“This year, we’re going to do a two-day show at the Lincolnshire Showground on July 9 and 10, with stage shows, gaming zone and special guests Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy (another ex-Doctor Whos) and Dave Prowse.

“Likewise, the event in Spalding will have something for everyone, no matter what film, TV or comic book character you may like.”

Susan Norton, events and conference manager for Springfields Events and Conference Centre, said: “We are very pleased to announce that Mark Longman has hired the centre for a Geeks Comic Convention on February 26, 2017.

“Not only is this exciting for us here at Springfields, but it is also a great opportunity for local residents to experience this amazing event which includes a line-up of special guests, exhibitions, trade stands and fantastic displays.”

Tickets for the Geeks Comic Convention will be £5 for adults and £3 for children aged 12 and under, with free entry for under fives.
