A Holbeach family are showing their gratitude to heart specialists who treated a young boy by having a fundraising party in the town this weekend.
Dan and Rebekah Taylor have been inspired by their sons Harvey (15) and Oliver (four) to organise an eight-hour football and cakes day at The Holbeach Hub in Boston Road South on Saturday from 10am until 6pm.
Oliver was two when a bad cough turned out to be a hole in the heart and muscle growth stopping blood flowing to his lungs, both defects having been successfully operated on by staff at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, six weeks ago.
Dan said: “We found out about Oliver’s heart defect by accident when we took him to the doctor who didn’t like the sound of his heart.
“He ended up going to the specialist at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston, where we met some pediatric people from Glenfield Hospital who explained things in simple terms and then asked us when we could go over there with Oliver for a scan.
“When we got to Glenfield, they told us that Oliver needed surgery and everything was brilliant from then on.
My eldest son Harvey decided that other people needed the help we got from Glenfield and we wanted to give a bit backDan Taylor of Holbeach
“There was a nurse at the end of Oliver’s bed who never went away from there, staff came round with a teddy bear and the smile it put on his face helped us some much.”
The fundraising event features a charity five-a-side football match, as well as tea or coffee with cake for £1, in aid of Heart Link Children’s Charity (East Midlands Children’s Heart Care Association).
Heart Link was founded in 1981 as a support group for parents and families with children found to have a heart defect, raising money for research and treatment at Glenfield Hospital.
Dan said: “My eldest son Harvey decided that other people needed the help we got from Glenfield and we wanted to give a bit back.
“We play five-a-side football every Sunday so we approached South Holland District Council about using The Holbeach Hub and it kindly donated the sports hall for us to use on Saturday.
“We’re hoping to raise £1,000 for Heart Link, especially for Harvey who has put a lot into this event.
“In the meantime Oliver is very well, although he’s still tender in his chest after open heart surgery six weeks ago.”
