Families from South Holland and elsewhere were spoiled for choice at the second annual Springfields Festival and Tulipmania on Saturday.

The traditional float and flower displays, live music and children’s rides were joined with a visit by the Watoto African Children’s Choir from Uganda, TV favourite Peppa Pig and characters from the hit Disney musical Frozen.

It was a special Saturday for Marisa Kievets and Bradley Grant who were chosen to be Tulipmania Prince and Princess, ably assisted by deputies Mollie Bracy and Jake Winkett.

David Norton, chief executive of Springfields Horticultural Society which helped stage the event, said: “The event probably attracted between 2,500 and 3,000 people over the weekend, many of them children.

“The gardens were probably the best they’ve been since the redevelopment ten years ago and that was the most attractive element of the weekend in terms of natural environment.

“The procession round the gardens was enthusiastically supported but the main success of the weekend, from the perspective of visitors, was our display of about 10,000 tulips and two floats decorated with tulip heads.

“People took up the opportunity of having their photographs taken next to them as a reminder of what the parade used to be like.”
