Spalding town centre is to have one or more new additions by the end of the year in the form of specially-commissioned sculptures.
Cornwall-born but now Newcastle-based visual artist Joseph Hillier (41) has been given the task of producing a series of sculptures capturing the essence of Spalding and its people.
Mr Hillier was interviewed by students, teachers and managers of Transported, a project aimed at getting more people from South Holland involved in arts activities, before being selected to come up with the sculptures which are set to be unveiled in December.
“I’m in Spalding this week to start my research and to ask what the town really needs,” Mr Hillier said.
“People have chosen to go for a sculpture in the centre of town and we can make it either a single, large piece or some physically smaller pieces.
“It’s a bit of a challenge because I’m known for making larger pieces of work, but it’s such an honour and I appreciate the importance of it.”
