ALBUM REVIEW: This Land - Gary Clark Jr

This is an absolute stomper of an album and surely the crowning of a new ‘Prince.’

For those who haven’t yet come across Gary Clark Jr, you are missing a treat. This is the latest album from the Grammy Award-winning maverick.

The opening title track is a powerful one, blending synths with fuzz bass in the intro. He challenges you to sit up and listen as he tackles social subjects and divisions in America today.

Born and raised in Austin, Texas, his music has its roots in blues but this album is about so much more than that.

The track ‘Feelin’ Like a Million’ is reggae-driven, ‘Gotta Get Into Something’ has a punk-like feel, and listening to the beautiful ‘Pearl Cadillac’ you could be listening to the 'Purple Prince' himself.

In fact, Clark has been praised by everyone from former President Barack Obama to the aforementioned late artist Prince. And what a wonderful tribute this album is.

Clark shreds the guitar like no other, making full use of the effects pedal.

If you’re looking for music that’s completely different, try this album for size.

The album is out now.
