Goon - Heaven is Humming: Album review
On first listen I wonder if LA-based band Goon are trying to be more like Nirvana, or bands similar to the Dandy Warhols. That, perhaps, shows more about my age and the music I grew up listening to.
Calling themselves a lo-fi scuzz rock outfit, the new album blends heavy guitars and rock drums in opening track 'F Jam' with a more soothing sound in second track Black Finch.
The band is fronted by Kenny Becker and their PR says that their new album ‘Heaven is Humming’ takes the sounds of 'foundational groups like Pixies and Boards of Canada (Becker’s all-time favorite band) and 'contextualizes' them through a modern lens, placing Goon alongside contemporaries like Forth Wanderers, METZ, Young Jesus, and Partisan label-mates Dilly Dally.
Since forming in 2016, the band has built a cult following in LA. The new album was written while Becker was suffering from a chronic sinus condition that required surgery and periodically debilitated his senses – including his hearing. The songs, described as fearlessly weird, yet also comforting and familiar - emerged during his brief periods of health and optimism.
The album is out on July 19.
