ALBUM REVIEW: Cher - Dancing Queen

I love Cher - and I quite like Abba too - but putting both of them together in this album, I’m not sure it works.

When Cher is belting out rock/pop hits such as ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’, ‘Love and Understanding’, or classics such as ‘I Got You Babe’ or ‘The Shoop Shoop Song’ it really works.

I can even forgive her for that echoey voice-dubbing in the over-produced, yet huge hit ‘Believe’ in the late ‘90s.

But Cher doing Abba? I’m not too sure myself.

That aside, I’m pretty sure the album is going to be popular. Cher is starring in the big movie sequel Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again and the album will tie in perfectly with her appearance.

She said: “After filming Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, I was reminded again of what great and timeless songs they wrote and started thinking ‘why not do an album of their music?’

“The songs were harder to sing than I imagined but I’m so happy with how the music came out. I’m really excited for people to hear it. It’s a perfect time.”

Cher’s versions of classic Abba songs such as ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’, ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘The Name of the Game’ do have an extra smattering of glitter and disco. It’s just not for me.

The album is out now.
