Charli XCX - How I'm Feeling Now - Album review
It was in April this year that Charli XCX announced she was planning, in the space of just six weeks, to write and record a new album completely from scratch.
‘How I’m Feeling Now’ is the result, her fourth full-length album - also known as her 'lockdown album'.
In it, she pours out her heart about how isolation has affected her. Knowing that she opened up to fans in an honest Instagram post about her mental health following the album’s release is important to note when listening to the tracks.
She told fans that she’d been ‘in quite a fragile state’ since the album’s launch. “I suppose I was so caught up in making and releasing this album, a process that more often than not takes months, sometimes years to complete, that I really ignored my mental health and emotional needs,” she said. “Ignored is maybe not the right word, perhaps pushed aside is a better phrase...”
The resulting album is a mixture of emotions and sounds. It is not always about the lyrics but here, she lets the music express her feelings.
She moves away from the sound of recognisable pop hits such as ‘1999’, ‘After the Afterparty’ and ‘Boom Clap’ and takes her sound in an experimental new direction.
So, while it may not be a classic ‘pop’ album, it’s raw and heartfelt. There are hints of '90s trance rhythms, other times a retro '80s beat, and in places a futuristic sound.
