Spalding United manager Gabriel Zakuani on his side's victory over Grimsby Town in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup
Manager Gabriel Zakuani wants to breed a winning habit at Spalding United.
The Tulips secured their place in the semi-finals of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup on Saturday after a 2-0 home success over Grimsby Town at the Sir Halley Stewart ground.
A goal in each half from Lewis Brownhill and Gregg Smith sealed the win against a youthful Mariners side.
Zakuani said: "I thought we did what we had to do to win the game. It was job done and I am happy that the boys managed to get us into the next round.
"There is a lot to improve on but we got the result which was the main thing.
"I want this team to have a winning habit and we got that.
"We weren't really troubled. They were a young side, but they were not scared of a tackle and give us a decent test.
"It's another game for the fitness of the boys and we are starting to see patterns in our games as the countdown to the season begins."
Star summer signing Marcus Maddison spent the afternoon watching from the sidelines due to being ruled out with a calf injury.
Maddison is likely to miss the next match at Deeping Rangers at the weekend but could return to face his former club Peterborough United in their pre-season visit to the Sir Halley Stewart on Wednesday, July 28.
Zakuani added: "Marcus does count as a few players in the squad and he is a big part of what I am trying to do.
"When you have a player like Marcus out, it is a big miss but he was here supporting the boys because we have built a kind of togetherness with a good atmosphere in the changing room."
