Bourne manager hopes his side will show Harrowby spirit at Newark Town

Bourne Town manager Simon Daws wants his side to pick up where they left off last season when they visit Newark Town for their pre-season friendly on Saturday.

The Wakes hope to have potential signings, ex-Spalding United midfielder George Stainfield, former Boston Town striker Patrick Muirhead and Cole Maule, all available for the trip to the Central Midlands League North Division side.

Daws will be hoping for a repeat of Bourne's last game before the coronavirus lockdown brought an early end to the 2019-20 in March, a 2-0 home win over Harrowby United in United Counties League Division One.

Jacob Fenton, now playing for Spalding United, and Rares Demeter were on the scoresheet at the JJ Mac Stadium against the Arrows who were fifth in the league at the time.

Daws said: "I was disappointed when the season finished early because we really did play well in our last game against Harrowby.

"I felt we'd got somewhere, having put Jacob in the shop window in the process.

"We never thought that we'd keep him, but if players move higher after we've given them an opportunity, that's fair enough and at least you feel like you're doing something right.

"Hopefully, we can pick up a few more players like Jacob and we've got some good youngsters coming through who we'll develop and then get them into the side.

"Fitness is the key thing at the moment, but also to look at what we've got in the reserves.

"We need to get off to a good start this season because when I came into the job in September 2019, Bourne had lost five league games and a couple of cup games, so the players' heads were down.

"So it was a case of getting their heads back up again."
