VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Stalemate for Spalding United

The blank scoreline speaks volumes for Saturday’s encounter at the Sir Halley Stewart Field.

The pitch has taken a real hammering in recent weeks – but a few days without rain made all the difference.

However, the game was largely devoid of clear-cut scoring opportunities with the shots on target not really bothering goalkeepers Michael Duggan and Mate Dsczki.

Market Drayton Town’s custodian was at full stretch to save a couple of efforts from Jenk Acar and King’s Lynn Town loanee Tom Siddons who also had a fifth-minute header cleared from the line by James Bennett.

But the early flourish did not develop and the interval arrived with the teams still in a stalemate.

New signing Danny Brooks replaced Lee Beeson for the second half and added a new dimension to Spalding United’s play.

His well-delivered free-kick found Siddons near the far post but his header was just over the bar.

Acar, in typical fashion, jinked past a few players but failed to complete the movement and was stopped in his tracks.

The visitors were down to 10 men on 56 minutes when Jeff Watkins was sent for an early bath following a second bookable offence.

When Drayton moved into home territory, they got little change from the defensive barrier provided by man-of-the-match Matt Varley, Ellis Humble and skipper Neal Spafford who were superb throughout.

Spalding: Duggan, Fixter, Hugo, Varley, Humble, Spafford, Walker (sub Davison 30 mins), Beeson (sub Brooks h-t), Siddons, Lockie (sub White 75 mins), Acar. Sub not used: Smith.
