Spalding United ended their season on a high as a one-goal home victory hit Chasetown's promotion hopes at the Sir Halley Stewart ground on Saturday.

Dylan Edge's second half strike saw the Tulips bounce back from Easter Monday's disappointing defeat at Carlton Town and secure a 10th place finish in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division.

The win was Spalding's third in the final four games of the campaign and also stopped Chasetown from having home advantage in the play-off semi-finals as they were leapfrogged by both Stamford and Halesowen after Saturday's defeat.

Tulips boss Brett Whaley said: "We have done some good things over the last few months.

"Obviously there are areas to improve but we have got quite a good record against the top teams.

"We have become a side who likes to upset parties and Chasetown came to us with a faint outside chance of going away as champions but we managed to stop them.

"It's something that we can take as a real positive in that we've been competitive against all of the top sides. The test now is to be competitive against everybody.

"We knew that we had been poor in the game against Carlton, but I sensed before the game that there was an expectation we would win on Saturday because we knew we could do it.

"It shows that if we can get consistent results then that belief comes in that you can do it.

"That was how we played and it was great that we managed to finish the season on such a high."

Whaley had made four changes to his starting line-up after the Carlton defeat with Liam Marshall, Sam Cartwright, Stefan Broccoli and Edge all returning.

The visitors began the brighter of the two teams and Oli Hayward sent an early effort wide before Danny O'Callaghan sent a header narrowly over the home crossbar.

Edge and Ben Seymour-Shove both delivered dangerous crosses with Scholars’ goalkeeper Curtis Pond being forced into the action at his near post to deny the latter.

Seymour-Shove then dragged a shot wide as Spalding looked to further compound the visitors' woes with news filtering through from elsewhere that results were not going in Chasetown's favour.

Home goalkeeper Michael Duggan kept the visitors at bay with a superb reaction to deny Harry Cunningham while Jordan Evans shot just over as the half drew to a close.

Duggan and Nathan Stainfield then joined forces to keep out a free-kick from Jared Holmes after the break before Spalding took a 63rd minute lead.

Seymour-Shove played the ball into Gregg Smith who showed his hold-up prowess as he fended off a posse of players before teeing up Edge who rifled home a strong finish into the roof of the net.

It was Edge's first goal since the end of January and just reward for an industrious display from the Spalding attacker.

Chasetown pushed for a late leveller but Spalding again stood strong with experienced frontman Kyle Perry sending a volley over the home crossbar as the Tulips held out for another high-flying scalp by keeping their third clean sheet from the last four games.

Whaley added: "It was a real group performance and defensively we were excellent again. We were very solid against a good side and looked like a real unit."

"It was also really pleasing for Dylan to get the goal because he works so hard and you could never question him for not putting a shift in.

"He's been disappointed not to get the goals which he is capable of, but I have worked with before and it's the first time I've seen him go through a bit of a goal drought.

"It does affect your confidence but the one thing that I know about him is that he's never one to shirk the effort.

"The same also goes for Ben Seymour-Shove who got the winner against Corby.

"They have both been really effective and worked their socks off but just haven't got the goals that they would expect and we signed them to get.

"They are genuine lads and have been disappointed so the fact we finished the season with both of them scoring winning goals in 1-0 wins is what they deserve for their hard work."
