Holbeach United fell further behind in the battle for survival in the United Counties League Premier Division North after a heavy home defeat on Saturday.

The bottom of the table Tigers went down to a 5-0 reversal against a revitalised Selston side at Carter's Park.

The Nottinghamshire side scored four times inside the opening 45 minutes to effectively put the contest beyond Holbeach whose improvement after the break was too little too late as their winless run in the league continued.

They have picked up just two points from their opening 13 games and are now seven points adrift of safety after failing to score for the ninth successive league match.

The Tigers had handed debuts to new recruits Will Nuttell and Nicky Frost against a Selston side who had taken six points from their previous three league games.

And they broke the deadlock inside the opening three minutes as Pat Quinn's cross to the back post was scrambled home by Jay Cooper.

Both sides then exchanged half chances with Aaron Eyett and James Tricks each shooting over for Holbeach while Jay Cooper cracked a fierce strike narrowly over the home crossbar.

Tigers goalkeeper Jake Frestle then produced a flying fingertip save to deny Quinn befoe he was beaten for the second time just past the half-hour mark.

Jordan Black's cross picked out Ollie Grimshaw who guided his shot beyond Frestle and into the home net.

Selston were now buoyant and they struck twice more before the break to put the match out of Holbeach's reach.

Black lobbed home their third goal in the 37th minute before he turned home Jack Cockram's low cross at the back post for his second and Selston's fourth five minutes before half-time.

Holbeach showed more attacking enterprise after the break with Frost looking like their main threat going forward.

However, they conceded a fifth goal when Cooper latched onto a long ball and rounded Frestle before slotting home.

Frost fired a couple of efforts wide before he saw another decent effort deflected for a corner that was met by the rising Nuttell whose header rattled the crossbar and was scrambled to safety as Holbeach's search for an upturn in their fortunes continues.
