Captain Nathan Stainfield to remain with Spalding United
Talismanic Tulip Nathan Stainfield has become the first player to commit his future to Spalding United for next season.
The popular centre-half has agreed terms for the coming campaign in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division.
Stainfield was a multiple award winner at Spalding’s end of season presentation after a cracking campaign at the heart of the Tulips’ defence.
And the former Boston United and Gainsborough Trinity defender was delighted to extend his stay at the Sir Halley Stewart ground.
He said: “I am proud and excited to have signed for a place that feels like my second home.
“It’s no secret that I am very fond of the football club and have lots of great memories here so I am delighted to be given the chance to compete in the new season for the Tulips.”
Stainfield’s acquisition follows hot on the heels of manager Brett Whaley, who has also committed his future to the club which he joined in December of last year.
Whaley has been busy since the 2021/22 season ended, putting his plans in place for the coming league campaign which starts on Saturday, August 13.
The Spalding boss said: “I am happy to get everything agreed for the new season.
“We’ve all been working very hard over the last few weeks planning for the new season and now it’s time to really crack on.
“We’re an ambitious club with ambitious targets and we’ll make sure we’re ready.”
However, one player who won’t be returning to the club next season is striker Gregg Smith.
Smith signed for Spalding at the start of last term before joining Grantham Town on loan midway through the campaign.
He returned to the Spalding ranks when Whaley took the reins, but announced on social media over the weekend that he would be moving on to pastures new.
Smith said: “My time at Spalding United is finished.
“Thanks to Brett and the lads and the top fans who have been class all season from start to finish.”
Twelve clubs from each Step 4 division will be participating this season in the FA Cup extra preliminary round on Saturday, August 6.
The remaining Step 4 clubs will join the FA Cup preliminary round on Saturday, August 20.
