Spalding United are beaten by Ilkeston Town in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division
Spalding United suffered their heaviest defeat of the season after a five-goal reversal at Ilkeston Town on Tuesday night.
The high-flying Robins netted three goals in 21 first half minutes to take control of the contest before adding another brace in the latter stages of the match at the New Manor Ground as the Tulips' six-game unbeaten run was ended.
Spalding's woes were also compounded by the second half sending off of Ollie Price as the Tulips contributed to their own downfall with Ilkeston's opening four goals in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division clash all being preventable.
The Tulips made the trip to Derbyshire without the services of skipper Gregg Smith who started the first game of a three-match suspension following his sending off before kick-off in last week's derby duel with Stamford.
The in-form Stefan Broccoli was also absent along with James Hugo, Marcus Maddison and Hugo Odogwo-Atkinson while Nathan Stainfield was named on the substitutes bench after a spell out injured.
Spalding made a bright start to the contest and had an early corner cleared from danger before Chris Assomblonga fired a shot over the crossbar.
Ilkeston started to grow into the contest and, after Aman Verman had shot over, they took a 14th minute lead.
Sam Cartwright's mispaced back pass went wide of goalkeeper Michael Duggan and the lively Billy Bennett burst onto the loose ball to tap home.
Duggan made a superb save five minutes later to deny Alex Troke before Ilkeston doubled their lead midway through the first period.
Bennett was this time the architect as he swung over a cross which hit Spalding's Shane Clarke and deflected into the net.
Bennett went close moments later with another shot over the bar before a third Ilkeston goal arrived after 33 minutes.
Troke had seen his initial shot saved by Duggan but Bennett reacted first to the rebound to score his second and Ilkeston's third of the match.
Ilkeston continued to push forward after the break with substitute Ollie Brown-Hill shooting just wide before Duggan kept out a lob from Zak Goodson at full stretch.
Spalding were then reduced to 10 men with 16 minutes remaining when Price was red-carded for felling Paddy Webb in the box when clean through and Troke converted the resultant penalty.
Ilkeston then added a fifth goal two minutes later as James Carvell pulled the ball back for Brown-Hill to fire home and seal the Robins' win.
