SPALDING RFC 6 PAVIORS RFC 73: TOWN’S unbeaten Midlands One East home record came to an end on Saturday – and how.
High-flying Paviors racked up a mammoth 73 points at the Memorial Field, with 48 of those coming in the last 20 minutes.
A fifth defeat of the season also sees Spalding drop into the bottom three of the standings. There was little sign of what was the follow eary on, as Paviors only led 15-3 at the break. The away side ran in the first try of the afternoon inside three minutes.
But Spalding battled back and got themselves on the scoreboard through Jim Williams’ routine penalty.
Skipper Harry Sharman then linked with winger Ryan Chappell as Town drove back towards the Paviors line, but they were thwarted at the last.
That was as good as it got for Town, with the away side running in two more unconverted scores before the interval.
With the breeze in their favour, Spalding fancied their chances in the second period – and it was they who scored first. Ed Duerden broke strongly from his own half and made 40 metres. He linked with Sharman, before Ash Anker drove towards the line. Paviors’ defence was then penalised for being offside in front of their posts, leaving an easy conversion for Williams.
A penalty and a lightning break from the away side put Town back on the back foot, though. And that was followed by seven more tries from Paviors without reply, as the hosts faced up to a real hiding.
Town were depleted, but can’t allow their previously excellent home form to follow suit in the wake of this demolition.
