New home, new division for Spalding RFC 1sts ahead of new season




Spalding RFC 1st team’s first pre-season match is a trip to Deeping tonight (7.30pm).

The Elephants finished last season with a flourish, with a 48-34 win at Bakewell Mannerians on the final day securing third place in Midlands 3 East (North).

This season Spalding have been placed in Midlands 3East (South) along with Bourne, Oakham and Stamford, meaning much less travel than in recent seasons.

Their league season gets under way at Dunstablians on Saturday, September 14.

Meanwhile, it’s goodbye to the Memorial Field as the first competitive match will also be their first at the new home - New Ground in Drain Bank North - where they will meet Stamford on Saturday, August 31 (3pm).

The squad’s enthusiasm has been evident with pre-season training starting in June.

Dan Adams has been reappointed club captain and Harry Sharman has taken on coaching duties for the seniors, while head coach George Reid concentrates on his increasing coaching responsibilities within the thriving juniors set-up

Good player numbers have been seen during fitness training and on Tuesday night more than 30 players took part in final preparations before tonight’s fixture at Deeping.

The build-up continues on Saturday (3pm) at home (New Ground) against Boston when the club is expecting a good number of spectators for this friendly derby.

A further home match, is scheduled for next week (Wednesday or Friday still to be decided) against Fakenham (7.30pm).

Other teams in Midlands 3 East (South): Stockwood Park, Daventry, Huntingdon and District, St Neots, Northampton BBOB, Rushden and Higham, and Queens.
