Spalding make it five losses in a row
Spalding United 0-1 Bedford Town
FA Trophy second qualifying round
Spalding United lost 1-0 to Bedford Town in the FA Trophy second qualifying round despite a battling performance from the Tulips.
The game included a trio of ex-Peterborough players made up by Jermaine Rene-Howe and Craig Mackail-Smith for Bedford and Gabriel Zakuani, who was in the Spalding dugout.
The match started off with a feisty feel to it, as the referee struggled to gain a stronghold on the game with players being booked for bad tackles.
Spalding had their first chance of the game in the form of Shane Clarke when he had his header put narrowly wide after Lewis Brownhill had whipped in a delightful ball into the box.
This was followed up by Jamie Goddard pulling off a brilliant block to deny Bedford a certain goal in the very next minute.
Connor Tomlinson then had the chance to put Bedford in the lead as he put his effort over the bar from very close range, followed by the forward putting a free header over the bar from only eight yards out.
The Tulips then nearly went 1-0 up when Lewis Brownhill crossed the ball into the box, it was pushed away by the keeper but it went into the defender and it nearly went into the back of the net.
In the next minute, Michael Duggan pulled off a brilliant save when Rene-Howe's header from just four yards was somehow saved by Duggan.
But, in the 37th minute, Rene-Howe made no mistake this time when he stabbed the ball home into the back of the net after a ball was played across the box to the ex-Peterborough player.
Cameron Johnson had the chance to get the Tulips back into it after Lewis Brownhill put the ball into the box, but he couldn't get his effort away.
George Zuerner then somehow put his effort from four yards over the bar, and missed the chance to get the Tulips back into the game.
Shane Clarke then had an effort that was blocked, there was big shouts from the Spalding bench for handball but the referee waved them away.
Bedford then had the chance to make it 2-0 with Ross Watson putting an effort from seven yards out over the bar.
Mackail-Smith then started creating his magic as he weaved through the defence and put his effort past the keeper but also past the post.
The game somehow only finished 1-0, but the Tulips battled away well but couldn't provide the finishing touch as they were knocked out the FA Trophy.
