SAILING: Prior at the double

Ten boats started the first race at Welland Yacht Club - number four in the Sunday Points Series.

Andy Prior (Laser) took the early lead from Tom Bell (Laser), Andy Agar (Laser), Geri van Haren (Phantom), Paul Burton (Solo), Alan Cox (Laser), Richard Stedman (Topper), Phil Robinson (Topper), Freya Willerton (Topper) and Samuel & Rosie Willerton manning the RS Feva.

As they rounded the windward mark (buoy 1) and headed downwind, Prior was still out in front from van Haren, Burton, Agar, Bell and Cox.

Once around the top mark (buoy 4), the order remained more or less the same.

During the second lap, the wind started to drop away as Burton moved up to second and van Haren slipped down to sixth.

Prior was first across the line followed by Burton then Agar and Bell. The positions remained unchanged once handicaps were applied.

The afternoon saw the start of a new Autumn Points series with a few boats dropping out and Paul Wilson (Solo) making a total of nine at the start.

Prior was just ahead at the start from Agar and Bell almost level.

They were followed by Freya, Burton and Wilson also level, the pairing of Samuel & Rosie then Stedman with Cox having to put to shore after the start to fix his outhaul.

As they made their way down wind, Cox managed to pass the slower Toppers and RS Feva - the slower boats all electing to take a single lap time.

During the second lap, the wind dropped further and switched direction.

Prior was again first across the line from Bell, Agar and Burton. The positions were unaffected by handicap.

By now the wind had dropped completely and with no signs of improvement, the final race of the day was cancelled.
