SAILING: Hat-trick of wins for Prior
Andy Prior claimed overall victory in Welland Yacht Club’s PBS Salva regatta.
The first race saw nine boats take to the start, including three juniors.
The races were run under personal handicap, giving everyone a chance of outright success.
With a light breeze and the occasional gust, they got under way without incident.
Prior and Clive Herd made the best of the start - closely followed by Ros Nickols, Brian Cobb, Geri van Haren, Richard Stedman, Freya, Rosie and Samuel Willerton.
On the way to the top mark Nickols was in second place with Cobb third.
With the top mark surrounded in weed, Prior and Nickols struggled to get a pathway through.
This allowed Cobb and the remainder of the fleet to close in, taking second place from Nickols.
At the back of the fleet, Samuel Willerton in a tiny optimist was outperforming his sisters in their toppers.
During the second lap, van Haren regained his earlier position of fourth on the water and after handicaps were applied.
Pulling out a big enough lead that personal handicaps wouldn’t change, Prior took the win from Cobb second and Nickols third. Highest placed junior was Samuel Willerton.
The course was altered for race two to avoid the weed further up river with seven boats taking to the start.
Again Prior got the early lead from Herd followed by Paul Wilson who joined for the afternoon's two races then Stedman and a trio of Willertons.
The wind had picked up slightly together with stronger gusts which seemed to push the weed from the centre of the course.
Prior maintained his lead from start to finish with Herd second, Wilson third and highest placed junior Samuel Willerton.
With only four boats taking to the start of the final race of the day, it was much of the same with Prior taking the win from Herd and Wilson third.
Overall victory went to Prior from Herd, Wilson and Stedman and the highest placed junior Samuel Willerton.
