George Russell back in Williams car this weekend after Lewis Hamilton returns negative Covid tests

George Russell will not drive for Mercedes in this weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton tested negative for Covid-19.

The young racing driver, from Tydd St Giles, filled in for Hamilton at the Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain last weekend and was unlucky to finish ninth after leading much of the race, only to be denied a podium finish by a pit stop mix-up and a burst tyre.

Russell (22) will now return to Williams.

Formula 1's governing body the FIA confirmed that Hamilton had returned a "number of negative Covid-19 tests" before travelling for the final race of the season.

On Twitter, Russell said: "Glad to see Lewis Hamilton back and fighting fit. Had a blast withMercedes but now I’m buzzing to put everything I’ve learned into action with my team Williams.

"Gonna give it everything this weekend - just as they do for me week in, week out."

Friday's first practice session begins at 9am.
