RUGBY UNION: Derby date for Deepings

Deepings start the Midlands Four East (South) campaign at Stamford College Old Boys.

Captain Lance Charity said: “We’ve done some recruitment in pre-season but it wasn’t ideal because we didn’t have any friendly games.

“We want to put it right, especially in the first league game as we lost there due to red cards last season.

“The league has grown from nine to 11 teams so it’s going to be tough.

“We expect Northampton BBOB, Bedford Swifts and Northampton Men’s Own to be strong.

“If we can challenge those three teams, there is a chance of being up there.”

Dan Bancroft, Alf Thompson and Johnnie Smith have joined Deepings.

Charity expects Simon Jakeman to make an impact after changing his position.

He also feels Ben Rippon and Ciaran Thompson will “lead by example”.
