RUGBY UNION: Spalding set for the big kick-off

Spalding make the trip to Dunstablians on Saturday for the first league game of the season.

The final preparations for the Midlands Three East (South) campaign featured a 63-14 friendly win at Thorney last weekend.

With Wisbech calling off the derby date, a squad of 25 players consisted mainly of second-team players.

Gav Sharman out-sprinted the defence to open the scoring but Thorney had a two-point advantage until Matt Holmes put Spalding back in front by scoring under the posts for Connal Mason’s conversion.

Thorney regained the lead but Sharman scored again before half-time.

Prop Matt Heaton picked up and with a turn of pace sprinted halfway down the pitch, offloading to Mason in support who in turn passed out to Sharman to score in the corner.

With fresh legs and superior fitness, the second half saw Spalding run away with the game - scoring five tries.

First-team captain Dan Adams said: “This was a good opportunity before the first league game away to Dunstablians to see some of the second-team players who will be challenging for a first-team start.

“The game also showed as a club we are at a good level of fitness but at training during the week there are a few areas we will still need to be working on.”
