RUGBY UNION: Semi-final win for Spalding under-14s

Spalding under-14s secured a place in the NLD Cup final against Newark on March 3 at Derby by beating Nottingham Paviors.

The team of Year 9 players from schools all over the area have been quietly going about their season in spectacular fashion.

At the end of last season, they went to a tournament in Mansfield to obtain the seedings for the under-14s competition this term.

They beat all six teams to come out as top seeds - scoring 125 points and having only 15 against them.

The NLD tournament is the main focus for this season, having previously been winners of the Premiership Landrover Cup.

The season started in September with an impressive 43-5 win at Cambridge.

So far Spalding under-14s remain unbeaten this season with an average points score of 41.

The cup competition began in October with a 55-0 victory against Kesteven.

In the next round, Stamford pulled out due to low player numbers.

The semi-final started well for Spalding with four tries in the first half from Donovan Capes (2), Freddie Fitzpatrick and Tom Wand.

Capes completed his hat-trick and Fitzpatrick kicked his second conversion of the match. Zak Franklin went over the line to seal victory.
