Spalding RFC are hoping to carry their impressive pre-season form into Saturday’s competitive opener at Ashbourne.
Town racked up over 80 points as they beat Sleaford heavily over the summer, before defeating rivals Peterborough RFC 10-8 last week.
Next up is the first round of NLD Shield (3pm), with Spalding among the favourites for the competition.
There’s a fresh look about Town this year, with a number of new faces compensating for the loss of key man Dave Hankinson.
And skipper Harry Sharman, who is suspended for the clash, is excited to see just how good his team are.
He said: “We’ll definitely be looking to keep our pre-season form going. It’s going to be interesting to see the new lads in action.
“The NLD Shield is a competition we could look to win, but we’ll have to see how we go.
“It’ll be something of a step into the unknown as we don’t know much about Ashbourne. We’ll be favourites on paper, but that means nothing.”
Ryan Chappell (broken nose) is hoping to be fit to deputise as captain in the wake of Sharman’s ban.
