Spalding Cycling Club’s first ever hosting of a road race was hailed as a triumph by organisers who staged the Tulip Spring Cup on Sunday.

Organised by Adam Ellis with fantastic support from the whole club, two races took place on the new course based out of Moulton Village Hall.

Category two and three riders raced in the opening regional A race before the support event saw category three and four riders compete.

Host club riders Kieran Buffham, Josh Wallis and friend of the Spalding club Matt Ellis - riding for SRCT MukOff - took on the 65-mile course in the first race.

The race started extremely fast and to everyone’s surprise the breakaway went very early on, and sadly all the local lads missed it.

Wallis and Ellis had a good crack at getting across the 50-second gap that had opened up, but their efforts were in vain.

Buffham began organising the chase but, with so many riders with team-mates up the road, co-operation was never going to happen and a frustrating race to the end ensued.

All three finished in the bunch and the race was won by a great effort by Corey Ashley and his team-mates at Leicestershire-based PB Performance.

Other notable rides came from Dan and Alex Galpin of Bourne, finishing fourth and 12th respectively.

Race two was much better for the locals, with Elliot Stones and Frazer Wallis out looking to make up for the disappointment of the morning for the Spalding riders.

They took on the 45-mile course and it was very similar to the first race which saw an early break sneak up the road.

Again Spalding’s riders missed it, and both Wallis and Stones made countless efforts to get across, coming very close to making the bridge - but ultimately the gap grew.

A fine team performance from COBL CC of Lincoln saw them take the first, second and fourth places through Carl Stubbs, Matthew Meanwell and Thomas Batchelor.

This left Stones and Wallis to battle for seventh, and Stones put in another fantastic sprint to take eighth just behind Steve Rose from Norwich - which was enough to secure him his category three license.

Wallis got caught behind a rider who bit more than he could chew and had to take evasive action to come home in 19th place.

The club took time to say a huge thank you to all the organising team and the fantastic volunteers at an event that attracted a healthy crowd of supporters.

Weston Hills resident Janet Pell was thrilled to see the racing extravaganza pass by her house as she cheered on the cyclists.

Janet said: “It was absolutely terrific and everybody from the organisers to the marshals and riders deserve so much credit for putting the event on. It would be lovely to have more races like this.”

The new season is now back with a bang and Spalding riders have been out in force elsewhere.

Neil Palmer kicked off the campaign at the Hard Riders early season 25-mile time trial, where he took home first veteran with a time of 1:04:13.

This was quickly followed up by Elliot Stones and Kieran Buffham at the first round of the NCRA Handicap series.

Stones started in the second group, while it was down to Buffham in the scratch group to ride down the others to have any shot at the win.

The scratch group worked well and the race came together on the final lap.

It all came down to a bunch sprint, and Stones positioned himself brilliantly out of the wind to smash the field and take home the win.

Buffham got tangled in a skirmish before the line but came home with a very credible ninth, which capped another great showing from the Spalding club.
