Welland Yacht Club stages the fifth race of the Frostbite Series

More news, no ads

With the wind not being quite as strong as the previous two weeks, 11 boats took to the start of the fifth race in the Frostbite Series at Welland Yacht Club.

Mark Scourfield (Solo) took the initial lead from Katie Follington (Laser Radial), Andy Prior and Tom Bell both Lasers, Richard Stedman (Laser 4.7), Gail Follington (Comet), Alan Cox and Mark Holland (RS 200), Ian Thompson (Solo), Ben Parsons (Laser Radial), Eric Murray (Mirror) and Richard Holland (Laser).

As they tacked their way both upriver and wind, Prior soon moved up to the lead with Bell second and Scourfield close behind in third.

The RS200 of Cox-Holland had made its way to fourth but, with being the lowest handicap boat, it needed to be out in front.

Katie Follington had to relinquish fifth by taking to the bank to effect a rigging repair, allowing her mum Gail to move ahead, while the Laser of Richard Holland had found its way to the front of the remaining fleet.

During the upwind section of the second lap, Scourfield would manage to take second spot from Bell with his sights set on the handicap gap to Prior out in front.

Disaster then hit Thompson as his tiller broke forcing an early retirement.

On the final run back to the clubhouse, Gail Follington passed Cox-Holland to move into fourth spot again looking to be with handicap distance of the boats ahead of her.

The boats rounded the clubhouse buoy to start the short beat to the finish line with Prior first across the line followed by Scourfield then Bell, G Follington, Cox-Holland, Murray (although a lap behind), K Follington, Holland, Stedman and Parsons.

Prior would comfortably hold onto the win after handicaps were applied with Scourfield second, G Follington third, Bell fourth, K Follington fifth, Cox-Holland sixth, R Holland seventh, Stedman eighth, Parsons ninth, Murray tenth.
