Spalding Cycling Club's season starts next month
Spalding Cycling Club is stepping up the pace in preparation for the start of its new season next month.
Following on from the success of its virtual 10-mile time trial league, it held an online open road race.
The course followed 25 laps of the Canary Wharf tour series circuit and was over a total distance of 16.1 miles.
The racing was again live streamed on YouTube and the action saw former Bourne Wheelers rider Ali Slater take top spot.
Slater – who is now representing the Clancy Briggs Academy – was a narrow victor after posting a finishing time of 34mins 57secs.
Spalding-based cyclist Bryn Richards, racing for Team Onform, took second spot just seven seconds behind race winner Slater.
Saint Piran’s Matt Ellis was third in 35.19 with Josh Houseley of WWV fourth only three seconds behind.
Tom Wright, of Team PB Performance, was just two seconds further back in fifth place, ahead of Louise Scupham, who was the first female finisher in 35.27 for sixth spot.
Antony Gough – the Bourne-based Velo One rider who won the final round of Spalding’s 10-mile virtual time trial – was less than one-hundredth of a second further back in eighth place following a series of close finishes.
Andy Bowser led the Spalding contingent home in 10th place after just pipping club-mate Elliot Stones.
Former Bourne Wheeler Maddie Gammons – now riding for Team Boom Pods – was the second female finisher in 12th place before a flurry of Spalding riders led home by Neil Palmer.
