Six of the best for Spalding Hockey Club

Spalding men’s first team took the derby honours against Bourne Deeping at Glen Park on Saturday.

Joe Higgins (2), Stu Cunnington, Josh Rowbottom, Jacob Baker and George Halgarth sealed the 6-0 win.

No goals were scored in the first quarter of the game as Spalding’s defence remained strong with credit to Sam Howitt, Piers Smith-Hughes and Will Baker.

Eventually, the home team got on the scoresheet with a well-worked goal from Higgins’ tap-in.

Bourne Deeping continued to put pressure on Spalding but the advantage was doubled by Halgarth with a deflection into the bottom right corner.

With 10 minutes of the half remaining, Cunnington made a good run and managed to slot the ball in the bottom left corner with a good strike.

In the second half, Higgins added his second goal then Rowbottom and Baker supplied equally good back post deflections.

The game was won and Nathan Davy kept their first clean sheet of the season by making some good saves.

Spalding ladies beat Dereham 2nd thanks to goals from Evie Maltby, Claire Hindmarsh and Maddie Haunch.

The opener was created from fine build-up play down the left-hand side by Angel Harkus leading to an attempt on goal by Hennie Boekestyn which was put away by Haunch.

Further hard work eventually paid off when Jess Ball put a ball through to Maltby who drilled the ball past the keeper who only saw the ball as it came back off the backboard.

More chances were created which were repelled until a short corner routine saw Hindmarsh finally put a legal strike on target which the keeper was powerless to stop.

Jo Bland earned a 1-1 draw for Long Sutton ladies at Pelicans who got a late equaliser.

Long Sutton men’s first team lost 8-1 at Kettering. Stef Cox replied in the second half.
