NOSTALGIA: Sporting memories are made of this

Top darter Martin Carter takes aim in 1967.

We look back at this Spalding Guardian sporting week in years gone by...

IN 1967:

Spalding Cycling Club members brave the cold.

Martin Carter, of Crown and Mitre, thrilled a crowd of almost 200 with some spectacular darts playing to win the Holbeach and District Darts League Morgan singles cup.

He beat Ray Larham (British Legion, Sutton Bridge) 2-0 in the final. Ray, the son of Arthur Larham (three times singles champion) failed to complete a unique family double because of Martin’s brilliant play, which mesmerised his semi-final and final opposition.

Martin took the division one title and a place in the semi-finals by beating Ernie Waters, Charlie Ball, Les Barnes and Ray Loren for the loss of only two legs.

Ray won his place in the last four by taking the division three title and on his way beat John Bent, Charlie Fairweather and Dave Jeffries.

Sadie Sharman played for Eastern Counties.

Sam Rate (Golden Lion A MSE) took his place in the semi-finals by winning the division two title, the hardest-fought of the night.

IN 1985:

The bitterly cold weather could not dampen the enthusiasm of these Spalding Cycling Club members who turned out for a club run.

In fact, they added 10 miles to their route, making a total of 55 miles, with a run into the Grantham area.

IN 2000:

Spalding’s Sadie Sharman progressed her rugby career when she represented the Eastern Counties at under-16 level.

Sadie (15), an outside centre, learned her rugby through the mini ranks at Spalding RFC, but as there is no age group action available to her at the club, now plays for rivals Peterborough.

ALSO IN 2000:

Crowland Angling Club members brought their season to a close with the annual dinner and presentation of awards evening at the Abbey Hotel.

Club champion was Kevin Thompson, above, who picked up four trophies.
