TABLE TENNIS: Holders Holland kick off in style

Have your say

A new season of Spalding and District Table Tennis League action returned last week, with the Moulton Shield taking centre stage.

Holders South Holland started well, beating second tier Nomads in straight ends to book a date with Bladerunners.

In an all-Division One tie, newcomers Haz Beans met JDM Allsorts and found current league number one in top form – resulting in a 4-1 defeat. JDM meet the winners of Dark Knights and The Marvels, with the Knights holding a 2–0 advantage.

The final pairing of Insidious and Ha’st produced the closest match of the round. Clive Shardlow took the first for Insidious, but Stewart Duffill responded with a win.

However, Shardlow and team-mate Gary Simpson won the doubles and Simpson his second game to take the tie, before Duffill rounded off a good evening personally by completing a double. They now meet JAG.

Meanwhile, JAG began the league programme by bringing forward a Division One clash against Defenders.

Defenders went into an early lead thanks to a wins by Alan Fear and Jean White. But then James Gibson and Allan Lewis took the doubles and Gibson won his second singles in five, before White settled the match in straight ends.
