TABLE TENNIS: Doubles are out in force

Have your say

Spalding & District League (Sponsored by Magellan Solutions Ltd): AN impressive 24 members turned out for the Val Mackey Doubles competition last week.

They were divided into four groups based on their league rankings, with the top and bottom sets paired, along with those in the middle.

The pairs were placed into two round robin competitions, playing the best of three ends – with the top two combinations going through to the semi-finals.

In Group A, Richard Hammond and Stewart Duffill went through undefeated, although they were pushed to a third end on two occasions.

Runners-up were Keith Davey and partner Dave Coley, with three of their five games reaching a deciding end. Their only loss was to the top pair.

In the other half of the draw, Allan Lewis and Rod Bain started slowly, losing the first match in three ends. However, they remained undefeated after that, but only once managed a straight ends victory once.

John Gilbert and Julie Stevenson defeated them and won two other games to total the points, the same as Adam Davey and Paul Gilbert.

However, as the latter won the game between the two pairs, they went through to the last four.

There was just enough time before the close to play the semis, with teams now required to play the best of five ends.

Group A winners Hammond and Duffill saw off Group B runners-up Adam Davey and Gilbert 11-4, 11-7, 11-8.

They were joined in the final by Group B winners Bain and Lewis, who beat Keith Davey and Coley 11-8, 12-10, 11-9.
