To close the year, the Spalding and District League’s committee decided to end with a new competition. In the event it turned out to have the same result.

The 27 entries were randomly drawn into four groups apart from four seeds who were separated.

Then, using the old style hard bats, they played two ends to 11. Winners received three points and if they drew then both had one point.

In Group 1 Phil Coote won all his games for 18 with the seed Colin Vertigan second on 13.

Three players were undefeated in group 2; Tomascz Dobrzyn (seeded 1) and James Gibson with four wins and two draws (14) and Christian Green (2/4/10) while a third of the games were drawn.

Gibson and Dobrzyn tied their game on ends and points so played a tie break of one serve each until one had a two point lead, which Dobrzyn won 3-1, so being placed first.

In group 3 the seed, Dave Gibson, went through with a maximum with David Gilbert second.

Group 4’s seed John Gilbert tied with Martyn Green undefeated with 4 wins and 2 draws. Gilbert came top thanks to the count-back in their game which went 20-19 in his favour.

In the quarter finals Coote beat J Gibson, Dobrzyn defeated Vertigan, and D Gibson and D Gilbert came through via 2-0 tie breaks against Green and J Gilbert respectively.

Dobrzyn reached the final with a win against D Gilbert 11-8 11-8, while D Gibson came through after a titanic battle with Coote 9-11 11-9 followed by a tie break which only ended in his favour after ten points.

In the final, top seed Dobrzyn defeated his team mate Gibson 11-9 11-3 and continued what he had been doing all year in taking every non-handicap trophy available.
