Three late goals in a five-minute spell sent Spalding men’s first team to a home defeat against Cambridge University 2nd.

Spalding opened the game in sloppy fashion and were grateful to keeper Josh Olphin who made two great saves in the opening minutes.

But the home team went ahead with a swift move down the left resulting in Dan Needham tucking home Stuart Cunnington’s cross.

The university boys bounced back to equalise with a soft goal but Joe Rogers put Spalding ahead again almost immediately.

Cambridge levelled for the second time but Needham added a third for Spalding.

It was the boys in blue who started the second half the more positive and again Spalding were slow in picking up the players coming through the middle.

The visitors took full advantage to slot home two goals.

Spalding responded and had a great period in which Cunnington equalised from a short corner then Needham completed his hat-trick to make it 5-4 with a deflection from Josh Rowbottom’s pass.

Glenn Perkins struck the post and the Cambridge boys got one soft goal and a couple of well-taken short corners to win 7-5.
