Spalding Ladies 1sts avenged their only loss of the season by beating Alford 5-2 at Glen Park to be a point behind leaders Peterborough in East Division 2NW.
The home side dominated much of the early play and took the lead through Kelly Slater with a trademark short corner routine.
It was 2-0 after 37 minutes following a fine solo run by Katie Gray allowed the league’s top scorer Kelly Tuplin to finish with ease.
Spalding added a third after fine solo work by Gray set up Slater who finished from close range, before Alford pulled a goal back from a short corner rebound.
The visitors made it 3-2 with a deflected short corner before Spalding started to play some free-flowing hockey as Holly Hetherington used her pace to get and provide Tuplin with a chance to finish confidently.
Coach Shaun Dewing then made some tactical changes and payer of the match Gray then scored a wonder goal, picking the ball up just inside the Alford half before gliding past five players and beating the Alford to make it 5-2.
Spalding Men’s 1sts also produced a five-star performance at Brigg in a repeat of last September’s County Championship Final.
In a friendly before the league kicks off again at the weekend, Stuart Cunnington scored twice before half-time, both from short corners.
Josh Rowbottom made it 3-0 and then Russell Watts deflected a Cunnington cross past the keeper, leaving Connor Allen to finish off an impressive 5-0 victory from the penalty spot.
There was defeat for Spalding Men’s seconds in East Division Three where they went 8-5 at home to Peterborough.
Joe Rogers, Glenn Perkins, Martin Perkins and Chris McKenna with a brace were on target for Spalding.
In East Five, Spalding Men’s fourths beat Long Sutton 3-2 and the fifths beat Long Sutton 4-0 in an East Six match.
