First-half goals from Joe Higgins and Dan Needham earned victory for Spalding men’s first team after a long trip to Felixstowe.

They slowly played their way into the game and built confidence in the first game of 2016.

Spalding were patient on the ball and controlled from midfield, despite Felixstowe’s efforts to disrupt the game.

After about 15 minutes the Felixstowe keeper decided he couldn’t distinguish the two kits from each other so there was a delay while Spalding put bibs on and the umpire also changed strip.

Spalding’s patience then began to run out as they flooded forward and opened the game up.

Felixstowe took advantage and went 1-0 up.

Spalding had been guilty of attacking only down the left-hand side but a reshuffle allowed them to exploit both wings with debutant James Grant performing well.

Spalding had a period of possession and won a number of free hits.

Josh Rowbottom took one of these quickly which caught Felixstowe napping and Higgins bundled the ball through the keeper to level.

The second goal came in a similar manner with Rowbottom drilling the ball into the D for Needham to deflect home, making it 2-1 at half-time.

Spalding then continued to control the ball, although ill-discipline saw two yellow cards, and the result was never really in doubt.

Long Sutton ladies first team returned from the Christmas break to beat Alford 3-2.

They went ahead thanks to skipper Leanne Woodhead but the visitors were back on level terms before half-time.

Sutton went 2-1 down but the equaliser soon came when Lyn Tancred took the ball past three defenders and slid an accurate shot between the keeper and the near post.

With around 12 minutes to go Leah Goodley received the ball on the right-hand side at the halfway line and then hit a beautiful forward ball with Woodhead diving full length to deflect the ball to Tancred’s stick. This left her through on goal and, as the keeper advanced, she coolly slipped the ball through her legs and into the goal.

Sutton’s rearranged game against league leaders St Ives was switched to Spalding on Sunday.

Keeper Lorraine Wallis was in outstanding form but the away team ran out 3-0 winners.

The ladies second team won 4-1 against Louth 2nd thanks mainly to a hat-trick by Connie Gittins. Also on target was Millie Lamming.

The men’s first team drew 2-2 at City of Peterborough 2nd with all the goals coming in the second half.

Sutton twice went in front through Danny Sisson.
