Spalding Cycling Club’s season continues with encouragingly high turnouts at every event.
The club’s 10 mile league is still the main focus for most but with the Hereward League series now under way with an increase in the number of Spalding members attending.
The Hereward League gives members an opportunity to test themselves against the likes of Peterborough Cycling Club, Bourne Wheelers and Fenland Clarion on their local courses.
Peterborough hosted the opener on their fast and undulating Southey Woods course with ten Spalding riders in a field of 34.
Neil Palmer returned in 23:20 for third overall, Chris Ward did 23:41 to finish sixth and Sam Bentley took 12th in 24:58. Completing the top 20, Simon Wright came back in 26:01.
A wait of just over two minutes followed and then, like London buses, four came along in close succession with Gary Bentley in 28:18, Ross Mcgivern 28:27 Barry Drew 28:34 then Sarah Bentley in 28:59.
Gareth Richards and Katie Butler completed the Spalding line-up with 29:24 and 31: 02 respectively.
Round two was at Aunby and hosted by Bourne Wheelers on their Witham on the Hill course.
Bad weather throughout the day and the hilly nature of the course meant that the turnout was less than usual with only 19 finishing.
Of those seven were Spalding members with Palmer winning in 28:02 and Ward runner-up in 29:13.
Wright was the club’s third man home in eighth overall with 32:16.
Gareth Richards clocked 33:59 for 12th, Drew finished in 34:39 for 13th, Gary Bentley was 14th in 35:55 and Sarah Bentley finished with 38:17 for the 19th spot.
Palmer and Ward are at the top of the fastest rider on scratch leaderboard with Wright fourth, Gary Bentley seventh, Drew eighth, Richards 10th and Sarah Bentley 1th.
