MOTORCYCLING: Season opener excites Wilson

Have your say

BEN Wilson begins his quest for the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship at Brands Hatch this weekend.

The Kirton rider is relishing the thought of racing around the short 1.2-mile Indy circuit, where he took a win and a fourth place in last year’s event – coming away as championship leader with 38 points under his belt.

Once again he is riding for the Gearlink Kawasaki team, and after a successful pre-season testing programme he is confident he can pull off a strong set of results from the opening round of the 2012 competition.

“I am really looking forward to getting back to race action,” said Wilson, who was runner-up last year. “The Brands Hatch Indy circuit is one of my favourite venues and I can’t get there quick enough.

“With the races being on the short Indy circuit I realise the need to qualify well to get a good start to my first race, then get my head down and take it from there.

“It is doubly important to secure a good result in the sprint race as the result sets the grid position for the feature race and with the Indy circuit being so tight and twisty a front row start would be a distinct advantage to any rider.”

The weekend kicks off with free practice tomorrow and Saturday, followed by a 40-minute qualifying session for Sunday’s 18-lap sprint race, which is scheduled to take place at 4.30pm. The feature race takes place over 26 laps on Easter Monday (3.25pm).
