Stuart Cunnington levelled twice as one of Spalding’s best performances of the season earned a draw at home to unbeaten leaders Letchworth.

The visitors began brightly and soon put Spalding on the back foot.

Some ill-discipline saw Spalding receive a number of green and yellow cards in the first half.

They began to go on the attack more often and were rewarded with a number of short corners.

Spalding were unlucky not to take the lead when Cunnington hit the post.

The game opened up in the second half and the all-important first goal went to Letchworth at a well-worked short corner.

Spalding hit back, though, from a short corner which Cunnington dispatched well.

They pushed for the winner but this left them a bit more exposed as they went 2-1 down.

Spalding turned defence into attack and Cunnington finished with a reverse stick strike at from the top of the circle, leaving the keeper with no chance.

On Sunday, Spalding cruised into the last 16 of the England Hockey Men’s Trophy with a 12-2 win over March Town.

Teenagers Joe Higgins and Joe Rogers scored early but March pulled one back.

Higgins added three more with Rogers also completing his hat-trick. Dan Needham (2), Cunnington (2) and Robert Dalton got on the scoresheet to complete the rout.

Spalding have been rewarded with a home draw in round three against Norwich City on Sunday, February 7.

Spalding ladies suffered a 6-0 defeat away to City of Peterborough. They take on fellow strugglers Bedford 2nd at Glen Park on Saturday.

Coming off the back of their first win of the season with a renewed confidence, Long Sutton picked up a point at home to Waltham Forest.

The away side took the lead midway through the first half but this seemed to wake up Sutton who began to get some possession.

Jimmy Harrison slipped the ball to Josh Fyson on the edge of the D with a quickly-taken long corner and a sharp reverse stick shot found its way past the keeper low to his right.

Sutton got off to a better start in the second half but Waltham Forest got back in front on the counter-attack.

The second equaliser came when Fred Whatling earned a short corner, Fyson found Danny Sisson on the back post and he deflected the ball in.

Sutton sensed the win was there for the taking, earning another short corner which Fyson dispatched with a drag flick to the keeper’s left.

Behind for the first time, the away side pressed for an equaliser and Sutton couldn’t hold onto the lead.

Sutton finished strongly but the game ended 3-3 for a good point.

Sutton will be looking to take these performances into Saturday’s trip to bottom-of-the-table Harleston Magpies 2nd.
