HOCKEY: Terrific treble for Poachers

Have your say

NEWMARKET 1st 2 SPALDING POACHERS 1st 4: PURRING Poachers completed a tremendous treble by clinching the Cambridgeshire Ladies’ League Premier Division Cup.

Playing against league runners-up Newmarket on Saturday, Spalding travelled to March knowing a tough challenge was ahead of them – with their opponents out for revenge.

A slow pitch made it difficult for both teams to put together the flowing hockey they’d played all season, but it was Spalding who settled quicker with Kelly Slater on hand to slot home the opener.

This gave Poachers a shot in the arm and they doubled their lead before the break though Karen Breen.

Both teams became a little frustrated in the second period, but Spalding’s player of the season Karen Timby scored a third goal which seemed to seal it.

However, when Newmarket pulled one back Poachers looked nervy – and it was no surprise when a second followed.

The comeback was quelled by Jacqui Hunter though, who was able to score her 15th of the season with a cool reverse-stick flick past the keeper to give Spalding their third trophy of the season.

Spalding now look forward to summer training before the new season. Any players interested in joining the club can contact captain Sally Pilgrim on 07917 408553.
