In-form Long Sutton 2nd smashed six past opponents Ely City 2nd to go top of East Men’s Hockey League Division 3NW with a third win from as many games.

Goals from Ben Shore, Alex Canham and Ryan Mountney put hosts Sutton 3-1 ahead at the break, before Jason Mallett drilled a fourth early in the second period.

Man-of-the-match keeper Steve Kirkham was beaten twice soon after, but Shore added two more to seal the points for Sutton – and keep their 100 per cent record alive.

Up in Premier B, Long Sutton 1st were edged out 3-2 at Ipswich 1st. Josh Fyson’s stunning drag flick cancelled out an Ipswich opener, but Sutton trailed 2-1 at half time.

Danny Sisson levelled again, but a late bobbling strike sunk the visitors.

In Division 2N it was a day to forget for Spalding 1st, as their unbeaten start was shattered by a 6-0 loss at Cambs Nomads 1st, despite a tireless show by man-of-the-match Jack Drury in attack.

Also tasting defeat for the first time this campaign were Spalding 2nd in Division 4NW. They went down 4-2, despite leading 2-0 at the interval through an own goal and a Joe Higgins strike.

Elsewhere, Long Sutton 3rd began their Division 5NW campaign with a 2-1 win over City of Peterborough Vets.

John Sullivan and man-of-the-match Jack Smith got the goals for Sutton.

In the same division, Spalding 3rd were on the wrong end of a nine-goal thriller as Wisbech 4th beat them 5-4. Kieren Scholes, Martin Pocklington, Steve Rogers and Matt Thorley all scored to make it 4-4 before a late Wisbech winner.

Spalding 4th and Spalding 5th both made flying starts in Division 6NW (N).

The 4th side crushed Alford 2nd 7-3 thanks to goals from Glenn Perkins (4) and Darren Willson (3).

The 5th side were 3-0 victors over Grantham 1st, with Cameron Roy, Matt Day and Sam Sly the scorers.

In the same division, Long Sutton 4th –with three 13-year-olds playing – drew 2-2 with COP 9th.

Ian White and Kane Portass netted for Sutton.

Four players made their East Women’s League debuts as Spalding Poachers 3rd started their Division 4NW (N) season with a 2-1 win at Alford 2nd.

Lucy Simpson, Ellie Holland, Stephanie Mountney and Fiona Carrigan all settled well, but it was Sam Foston who netted both goals for the Poachers.

Up in Division 2NW, Spalding Poachers 1st were handed a 2-1 home reverse by St Neots Ladies’ 1st.

Trailing 2-0 at half time, player-of-the-match Kelly Slater gave Spalding hope with a swept finish – but they couldn’t find a leveller in a frantic final five minutes.

Meanwhile, Long Sutton Ladies’ 1st drew 1-1 with Alford 1st in an attritional contest at the Peele Leisure Centre.

Sarah Walker weaved through Alford’s defence to give Sutton an early lead, but Alford pegged them back just before half time.

In Division 3NW (N), Long Sutton Ladies’ 2nd got their season up and running with a 2-2 draw against Horncastle 2nd.

Emma Howell’s solo effort put them ahead, but they required a Millie Lamming goal to secure a point.
