Spalding Poachers 3rd are within two wins of the Cambs Ladies’ League Division Two title after they won their top-of-the-table clash with Huntingdon 3rd 2-1 on Saturday.
The going was tough early on, with keeper Kathy Martindale forced to make some terrific saves, while defenders Ysabel Ward, Maddie Oldfield, Frances Dalton and Sam Maltby worked hard to scramble the ball clear of the D.
But Poachers eventually got going and created numerous chances for Alex Allwright before opening the scoring rather fortunately, as AJ Bunyan fired home off a Huntingdon player.
After the break player-of-the-match Dalton injected the ball beautifully for a host of penalty corners – and she was finally rewarded with a determined goal to make it 2-0.
Huntingdon pulled one back, but Spalding held on to leapfrog their opponents and put themselves in pole position for the title.
Elsewhere, a Jacqui Hunter strike saw Spalding Poachers 1st take a 1-0 half-time lead in their East Women’s League Division 2N clash with Cambs Uni 2nd – but they ended up going down 2-1.
Long Sutton Ladies’ 1st were also beaten in East Women’s League Division 1N, as they went down 3-0 at Lowestoft Ladies’ 1st.
But Long Sutton Ladies’ 2nd did bag a 2-0 victory, Lisa Barker and Jeorgia Carr scoring to see off Alford 2nd.
