GOLF: Ladies leading the way after sensational starts

Have your say

TWO of Spalding Golf Club’s ladies teams are sitting pretty at the top of their respective tables after making sensational starts to the season.

The ladies’ first side lead the way in Division One following a fine 3.5-0.5 win at home to Stoke Rochford, having only dropped only one point in their first three matches.

Leading the way were Pat West and Dianne Platt with a 4&2 success, while the on-song Angela Roper and Elizabeth Holbrook won 5&3.

Also victorious were Paula Brown and Lesley Plumpton (4&3), while Gerry Barnett and Norma Parker halved.

Spalding’s second league team are also in red-hot form and have reached the summit of Division Two following back-to-back wins.

l Spalding’s Pat West and Dianne Platt have made encouraging starts at the English Seniors Closed Amateur Championships at Saltford Golf Club in Somerset.

West is tied for sixth place after the first round with a super 79, while Platt is exactly midway through the 70-strong field after shooting an 86.

l A friendly at Blankney saw the home side edge out Spalding 3-2.

Eileen Bridge and Norma Parker narrowly lost their game, as did Angela Roper and Barbara Newcombe and Jenny Pipe and Elaine Harrison.

Victorious for Spalding were Jean White and Avril Norton (4&3) and Dina Reedman and Bev Harpham won (3&2).

l Spalding picked up a 3.5-0.5 win in a friendly clash at Sutton Bridge.

On winning form were Eileen Bridge and Angela Hunt (2&1), Mo Wallace and Phyl Borst (1up) and Maureen Orwell and Judy Rawlings (3&1), while Lynda Double and Millie Thorold halved.

Men’s section: Spalding’s top scratch team launched an impressive comeback to beat hosts Burghley Park last weekend.

Despite losing the first three games, they fought back to earn a valuable point by winning the last three.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Mark and Oliver Mitchell (5&4), Gavin Merrison and Mark Laud (1up) and Steve Wade and Keith Hearne (1up). The second string also shared the points in their league game against a strong Sleaford side at the Surfleet course, also in a thrilling 3-3 tie.

Their wins came from Noel O’Keeffe and Trevor Laud (5&3), Peter Clark and Hugo Kedzlie (3&2) and Lloyd Chatham and Tom Reedman (2&1).

l Despite heavy rain for most of the day 38 mixed pairs competed for the Ben Smalley Trophy.

The bogey competition was won by Rod and Angela Hunt with a score of +4, one point ahead of Alan and Angela Roper (+3).

Completing the leaderboard and in third place were Peter and Eileen Bridge on countback from Martin and Debra Ward, both with a +2 score.

l Spalding suffered a heavy loss in a social match played away at Woodhall Spa.

They went down 5-1 with Vic Davis and Paul Johnson being the only winners, although two other pairings only lost on the last hole.

l The Third team have had mixed fortunes in their recent social matches, starting with a 5-1 loss at home to Boston.

Rob Sampson and Dave Fitter were the only winners – although they were four down after five holes.

But a birdie from each of them on the back nine helped the to come back to win 1up.

A trip to the seaside against North Shore then resulted in a 3-3 draw which had everything – gale force winds, thunder, heavy rain and good golf.

On a course that is a mix of parkland and links, Spalding’s winning pairs were Cliff Harrison and John Taylor (1up), Keith and Pete Williams (2&1) and Rob Sampson and Dave Fitter (2&1). Harrison was the star of the show with five birdies.
