A host of determined players from Spalding shone in windy conditions at Surfleet, with 20 shooting under par in the monthly medal competition.

But of the 147 entries it was Grimwood (69-2=67) who won the lower handicap category with a nett 67. He also shot the best gross score with a superb 69 – earning himself a handicap reduction to one in the process.

David Perrott (76-8=68) just edged second spot on countback from Richard Woods (82-14=68) and Oliver Mitchell (73-5=68) after all carded a nett 68.

l Other leading scores in this category: 70 – Harry Hunt; 72 – Nick Illingworth, Stephen Camm, Robin Exley and John Reynolds.

Meanwhile, Stephen Rothwell (86-19=67) won the 15-28 handicap category on the eve of his 17th bithday after carding a nett 67.

That was two strokes better than Peter Southgate (90-21=69) and Roger Brown (85-16=69).

Brown also had the lowest gross score in this category with his 85.

l Other leading scores came from: 71 – Steve Phillips, Trevor Overson, Paul Green, Mick Lynas. 72 – Bob Ratcliffe, Dave Bell, Nigel Cook, David Bergmann.

r SPALDING’S third team just earned the bragging rights over the coming winter months after defeating the ladies 5.5-4.5 in a social match played.

Their winning pairs were Kevin Siddle and Trevor Laud (2&1), Terry Thorpe and Neil West (4&2), Rob Sampson and Dave Fitter (5&4) and Ray Barnett and Mike Murphy (2&1).

Best performance from the ladies came from Tracy Siddle and Jackie Bailey-Scott.

All square after 15, a birdie two from Bailey-Scott on the par three 16th and another birdie on the 17th, this time from Siddle, won them the game 2&1.

Other winning pairs for the ladies came from Hannah Thorold and Paula Brown (1up) and Millie Thorold and Jane Toal (1up).

Meanwhile, Pete Williams and Geoff Skinner halved with Sybil Thorpe and Di Sanderson, Robin Roffe and Keith Moore halved with Noreen Tointon and Janet Earth and Roger Brown and Alan Roper halved with Beryl Skinner and Bev Harpham.

Ladies’ section: Spalding Ladies’ Invitation Day was won by Angela Roper and her guest Helen Roscoe from Toft with 41 points in the 3/4 handicap better ball format.

Also with 41 points and in second place was Jan Inglis, partnered by Jackie Wells. Third with 39 points were Millie Thorold and Sue Hennigan, ahead of Sue Matthews and Sandra Juggins on countback.

Completing the top five were Pat West and Andrea Stockdale. West also won the nearest to the pin prize on the ninth, while Anita Cross was closest on the 16th.

West, Cross and Ellis were the home players who recorded a ‘two’.

• Dianne Platt and Paula Brown won the Daily Mail Foursomes competition with an excellent nett 73 and will represent the club in the 2012 matchplay stage of the competition. Just off the pace were Jan Inglis and Sue Watson in second (nett 74).

• Pat West won the past captain’s 13-hole Stableford competition with 30 points, ahead of Elizabeth Holbrook with 28 points.

• Elaine Hancock (39pts) won the silver division first prize in the Midland Vets Individual Stableford competition held at Radcliffe-on Trent.

• In a friendly match away at King’s Lynn, Paula Brown and Sue Watson gained the only win for Spalding (7&5).

Playing a greensomes format, lady captain Eileen Bridge and vice skipper Norma Parker, Mags McArdle and Lynda Double and Olive Gooderson and Margaret Barkway narrowly lost their games.
