Spalding Golf Club men’s first team powered their way into the semi-final of the Bramley County Singles Scratch Matchplay competition.

Spalding were able to field their strongest trio of Patrick Kelly (handicap -3), Simon Richardson (-2) and James Crampton (-0) in brushing aside Elsham, near Brigg, 3-0.

All three players won their games comfortably and in style.

Current England international Kelly won 8&6, which included six birdies out of the 12 holes played, and both Richardson (2&1 win) and Crampton (4&2) had four birdies each in their respective games and delighted their home supporters with their high quality golf.

Spalding now have a mouth watering home semi-final tie against local rivals Sleaford next month.

nThe first team did not fare so well in their latest South Lincs Scratch League game, losing 5-1 to leaders Belton Park at their Grantham course.

Spalding’s only winning pair was Dan Hines and Chas Lacey 3&2.

nThe second team, however, moved into a mid-table position after a good 4-2 home win against their counterparts from Burghley Park.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Mark Cooley and Chris Hancock 2&1, Hugo Kedzlie and Lawrie Haley 5&4, Ian Starr and Mark Dodds 1up and a welcome return for Tom Ladbrook partnered with the steady Dave Perrott, winning 4&2.

nThe mother and son combination of Janet and Archie Davies saw off 30 other mixed pairs to win the Ben Smalley Trophy.

Their score of +4 secured victory in the bogey competition, but only on countback from Elaine and Chris Hancock, also on +4. Olive and Peter Gooderson claimed third spot with +3.

nA social match against Boston at their Cowbridge course resulted in a 3-2 win for Spalding, with one game halved. Winning pairs for the visitors were Paul Tudor and Charlie Wallace 5&3, Dave Perrott and Greg Bayliss 5&3 and John Reynolds and Paul Johnson 4&2. Ron Rolfe and Lawrie Haley halved their game.

On a cold, grey day at the seaside the winning pairs for Spalding were Nick Edwards and Richard Woods 3&2 and Geoff Gargett and Graham Smith 1up.

But the team returned to winning ways at the Surfleet course against a strong Boston team, the wins coming from, Alan Pritchard and Peter Southgate 4&2, Alan Elms and Trevor Horrocks 3&1 and Paul Hooper-Roe and Keith Moore 2&1. Rob Sampson and Dave Fitter halved their game.
