Spalding’s maiden season in the East Premier B division started in style with a 5-1 victory away to Cambridge University 2nd.

They welcomed new signings Josh Olphin and Dan Needham who both have National League experience.

There was also a first-team debut for 16-year-old Joe Higgins up front as last year’s top scorer Stuart Cunnington was forced to sit out the game due to a ban.

After a goalless opening period, Needham broke the deadlock then, only a couple of minutes later, Connor Allen ended a flowing move.

Soon afterwards it was 3-0 as Rob Dalton beat three defenders and smashed the ball into the bottom corner.

He was unlucky not to get a second goal with an action replay as he hit the post this time.

Cambridge pulled one back but Allen scored again and another team move was finished off by Jack Drury from a narrow angle.

Long Sutton men’s first team began their campaign with a 3-2 defeat at Wisbech.

They started the game at a relatively slow pace, giving Wisbech a little too much respect and time on the ball.

A cheap giveaway of possession in midfield exposed the Sutton backline to a swift counter-attack and a simple tap-in at the far post put the hosts 1-0 up.

New captain Ashley Taylor rifled the ball into the back of the net with a trademark powerhouse finish.

Wisbech struck early in the second half with another quick counter-attack and a third goal came soon after.

Danny Sisson turned the Wisbech keeper and stroked the ball into an empty net with 10 minutes remaining.

Sutton pushed and probed to find another opening but the Wisbech defence held firm.

A new-look Long Sutton ladies first team were the better team yet failed to collect three points after a late mix-up gifted a 2-1 win to St Neots.

Tania White hit the post with a penalty but captain Leanne Woodhead fired home the second-half equaliser before St Neots took advantage of keeper Lorraine Wallis’ mistake.
